The Right Questions to Ask Before You Commit
A VP of Clinical Operations evaluating AI documentation tools should be asking vendors questions that go beyond speed metrics. Specifically:
- Does the tool reinforce clinical structure, or just capture narrative? Speed-focused tools transcribe what a clinician says. Tools that strengthen documentation guide clinicians toward the specificity and clinical reasoning that makes a record defensible – skilled care justification, functional status, response to treatment. Ask vendors how their tool handles documentation that is detailed but clinically incomplete.
- How does the tool perform across clinicians with different documentation habits? One of the most persistent documentation problems in home health is variance. Ask vendors how they support consistency across your clinical team, not just in ideal conditions, but across clinicians with different experience levels and documentation styles.
- What does data show beyond the point of capture? If a vendor can only speak to speed and volume metrics, that’s a signal. Ask what downstream indicators they track, whether documentation completeness improves over time, whether clinicians are returning to charts less frequently, and whether the records their tool produces require less follow-up.
- Can the tool demonstrate performance at the coding and billing stage? Vendors who can speak to downstream impact with specificity, including revenue protection, reimbursement outcomes, and audit readiness, are building tools designed for workflow performance. Vendors who can’t are building tools designed for clinician speed.
What Strong AI Documentation Performance Looks Like
Organizations that have moved past initial AI adoption describe a specific shift: documentation stops being something that gets reviewed and fixed and starts being something that gets confirmed and moved. QA becomes a validation step rather than a correction step. Coding clarifications decrease. Billing timelines tighten, not because the process changed, but because the documentation arriving at each stage is clear enough to act on without interpretation.
That’s the standard worth holding AI tools to. Not how fast documentation is created, but how reliably it performs from the point of care through to reimbursement.
