When people talk about speech recognition in the context of clinical care, almost all of the attention goes to support clinical documentation and EMRs. However, there’s another equally compelling use case: CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry). While CPOE adoption is a key metric for meaningful use, both in the inpatient and ambulatory setting, less than 25% of hospitals have it up and running. Using a pocket notebook, “sticky notes” or oral communication to transmit this information is a regular practice among the nursing community. With escalating reporting requirements, it’s estimated that nurses are spending 25-30% or more of their daily shift on documentation – reducing the time they can spend on patient care.
