Before nVoq existed, I was involved in starting two companies, iBasis and BeVocal, that participated in the early convergence of voice, telephony, and the Internet. iBasis created a global network transporting phone calls over the public Internet, and BeVocal leveraged grammar-based speech recognition to build an IVR service in the cloud (back then we called companies like BeVocal “Application Service Providers” or ASPs). Experience at iBasis and BeVocal convinced me that we needed a new approach to building voice applications in the Internet era.
